📈 The 5-5-5 Rule: A Great Tool for Quick, Confident Decisions
In a few weeks, I’m heading out on a long vacation with my family (as you may remember from a previous email). I’m excited, but I’ll be honest—getting ready for it has been a little stressful.
I’ve been trying to get work wrapped up, schedule everything out, and make sure I can actually relax and be present while we’re away. It feels like there are a hundred little decisions to make every day, and sometimes I catch myself stuck in indecision over things that, in the grand scheme, probably don’t matter much.
If you’ve ever felt paralyzed by small choices, or found yourself overthinking the same scenario again and again, you’re definitely not alone. I know my inner critic can get loud, second-guessing every possibility and making even simple decisions feel overwhelming.
But I came across a concept a while back that’s helped me cut through the noise and get unstuck: the 5-5-5 Rule for Decisions. It’s a simple framework, but it’s changed the way I approach decision-making—especially when I’m stressed.

What Is the 5-5-5 Rule?
The 5-5-5 Rule is designed to help you step back and see the bigger picture. The next time you’re facing a decision—big or small—pause and ask yourself three questions:
Will this matter in 5 minutes?
Will this matter in 5 months?
Will this matter in 5 years?
By considering how much impact your decision will have in the moment, in the medium term, and in the long term, you can avoid getting caught in a loop of overthinking and self-doubt. Most of the time, you’ll realize that what feels huge right now won’t matter much down the road.
I’ve found this especially helpful when I’m spiraling into negativity or feeling overwhelmed. It helps me zoom out, get some perspective, and make choices that actually align with my values and goals—not just my stress in the moment.

Why Does the 5-5-5 Rule Work?
When we’re anxious or stressed, our brains tend to focus on short-term discomfort. We want relief now, even if it means making a choice that isn’t great for us in the long run. By pausing to look at the bigger picture, we can move beyond the emotional noise of the moment and make more rational, values-based decisions.
Research shows that when we consider the long-term effects of our choices, we tend to make better, healthier decisions. The 5-5-5 Rule gives you a quick way to break out of the short-term mindset and put your decisions in perspective.
How to Use the 5-5-5 Rule: A Step-By-Step Guide
1. Pause and Check Your Emotions
Before you jump into the three questions, take a breath. Notice if you’re feeling anxious, frustrated, or overwhelmed. Acknowledge your feelings—don’t try to push them away. Just by pausing, you’re already breaking the cycle of knee-jerk reactions.
2. Ask Yourself the Three Questions
For whatever you’re deciding, ask:
● Will this matter in 5 minutes?
● Will this matter in 5 months?
● Will this matter in 5 years?
Write down your answers if it helps. This can be surprisingly clarifying—often, you’ll see that the thing you’re obsessing over will barely register in your life a few months from now.
3. Consider the Bigger Picture
Now, reflect: Are you making this decision because it aligns with your values and long-term goals? Or are you just trying to escape discomfort in the moment? Let your answers guide you toward what really matters.
4. Make Your Choice Intentionally
With this new perspective, make your decision. Choose the option that serves your long-term well-being, even if it’s a little uncomfortable now. Give yourself credit for making a thoughtful, intentional choice—this is how you build self-trust and confidence.
5. Practice Self-Compassion
No system is perfect. Sometimes you’ll make a decision that doesn’t work out the way you hoped. That’s okay. The important thing is that you’re practicing a new way of thinking and learning for next time. Be kind to yourself and keep moving forward.
Try It This Week
If you find yourself caught in indecision—whether it’s about prepping for a trip, responding to an email, or choosing how to spend your weekend—try the 5-5-5 Rule. Pause, ask the three questions, and let the answers guide you. You might be surprised how much lighter you feel—and how much easier it becomes to move forward with confidence.
Remember, most of the little decisions we stress over won’t matter in the long run. Save your energy for the things (and people) that really do.

The featured video for today, The Regret Minimization Framework, breaks down the mental model famously used by Jeff Bezos to make tough decisions by asking: “Will I regret not doing this when I’m 80?” It’s a powerful way to cut through short-term anxiety and focus on what will matter most in the long run.
This approach fits perfectly with today’s topic on the 5-5-5 Rule—both frameworks encourage you to zoom out, put your choices in perspective, and make decisions you’ll feel good about years from now. If you ever find yourself stuck in indecision or overthinking the little things, this video is a great reminder to let your future self guide your present actions.
