📈 How to Set a Breakthrough Goal for 2025

It’s time of year again…

We’re heading toward a new year and everyone is talking about their resolutions.

This is where you’ll see crowded gyms in the first few weeks of January.

Then the gyms will be at their normal capacity come February.

To be brutally honest, I think resolutions are complete B.S.

They are nothing more than a list of general aspirations without a concrete plan.

So instead of wasting your time talking about resolutions, I want to challenge you to focus on achieving one breakthrough goal for 2025 and beyond.

This type of goal is much more challenging because it will take you at least a year to achieve. It’s something you’ve always dreamed of doing.

A breakthrough goal is not a short-term goal or something that can be achieved easily. It will require work and dedication that you know will be worth it in the end.

As an example, my breakthrough goal for 2025 is to build up my Etsy store and start releasing physical products. This isn’t something that will happen overnight. Instead, it’ll be a process that takes many months (or even years) to achieve.

Now, if you’re still unsure about what a breakthrough goal looks like, here is a list of ideas that might spark your interest:

To achieve the honor of Summa Cum Laude.

To visit every family member around the world at least once.

To create a new product that will bring in at least $50,000 during its first year on the market.

To learn a new language fluently within the next two years.

To write a book and get it published within the next five years.

To start your own business and make it profitable within the next three years.

To travel to every continent in the world within the next ten years.

To become a black belt in a martial art within the next five years.

To complete a PhD or other advanced degree within the next seven years.

To become financially independent and retire early within the next ten years.

To climb a major mountain, such as Mount Kilimanjaro, within the next two years.

To become a professional musician, artist, or writer within the next five years.

As you can see, breakthrough goals require many years of planning and consistent action.

Okay, now that you have an idea of what a breakthrough goal looks like, let’s turn this idea into an action plan.

Step #1: Pick one goal (or a max of two) breakthrough goals

This should completely change the trajectory of your life.

So think big here!

If you feel like your goal is easily achievable, think deeper into how you can go even further. Envision the future that you want to see and find a way to make it a reality.

Step #2: Research this goal to find out what it will take to do it

Answer these questions while you’re fully fleshing out this idea:

How much money and time does it cost?

Who has achieved a similar goal?

How can you learn from this person?

What did they do daily to make this happen?

Will you be able to achieve this goal alone or will you need help?

Do you have access to the resources that you need in order to be successful?

What could possibly go wrong or what obstacles might you face?

 Is your goal measurable?

Step #3: Create a plan for achieving your breakthrough goal

Since it’ll probably be a multi-year goal, you don’t have to have all the answers right now.

Just have a general timeline that lays out the order in which you want tasks to be accomplished that will get you towards your goal.

(Side bar: One resource that can help with this is our goal planning templates that are part of our Time Management and Productivity Bundle.)

Step #4: Chunk it down

Identify what the routines and habits are required to move toward this goal and repeat them daily.

Consider what you will need to change about your current lifestyle. This may involve longer work hours, reaching out to talk to new people or network on a regular basis, or maybe even giving up some weekends to do research.

For more information about this step, check out this video about how to turn goals into habits:

Step #5: Evaluate every choice against this goal

Does each choice bring you closer or farther away from your breakthrough goal?

If something doesn’t align, then be merciless with avoiding this activity. Don't allow anything to stand in your way of achieving your success.

One good video that can help is the Warren Buffett parable about the 25-5 rule:

Step #6: Share this goal publicly and often

Sure, it’s probably a bit scary to talk about it, but the more you mention it, the more you’ll start to recognize opportunities and people who can help you with it.

It will also help to keep yourself accountable with your progress. If you know people have their eye on you, you will never lose motivation to work.

There you have it…

A quick step-by-step process on how to achieve breakthrough goals in your life.

Just remember that it’s important to have these types of goals in your life.

They open a new, unimagined world that adds excitement to your life.

They will also stretch you in ways you did not previously imagine and give you new opportunities that you would not have otherwise had.

⚙️1% Habit Idea

Today’s idea takes the idea of making 1% improvements and applying it to your career.

You’ve probably heard the expression, “It’s not what you know. It’s who you know.”

Well, it’s true for every area of life, but this is especially true when it comes to your career.

Specifically, if you’d like a better job, then one of the best strategies you can do is to consistently build up your network by connecting with one new person each day.

How to Get Started

There are many ways to improve your business network. My recommendation is to combine online networking websites with in-person events to build up your relationships.

Here are three resources you can use to get started:

  1. LinkedIn: The best social media site for making business connections and profiling your skills, knowledge, and areas of expertise.

  2. Meetup: The preferred site for finding specific groups in the area and connecting with people who are interested in your career field.

  3. Facebook Groups: One of the best resources for finding people who share a mutual interest. There are millions of groups here, so it’s not hard to find a few that specialize in your industry.

To get started on these websites, I recommend completely filling out your online profile. Be sure to list your skills, previous job experience, interests, and anything else that highlights your unique talents.

Next, make a commitment to contact an average of one new person every day. When introducing yourself, keep it brief and focus on making a genuine connection.

This message shouldn’t be about what you’d like to “get” from this person. Instead, talk about how you share an interest in the same career and you’d like to make a connection. Include a note from something about their profile that stood out.

The same principle applies for in-person meetups. Focus on making genuine connections and how you can help the other person first.

Once you start to build up your network, look for ways to strengthen these bonds. Send them referrals, comment on their social media updates, and share anything they’d like to promote. Most importantly, post updates and links to industry-specific content to show you’re someone who knows this business.

Building up your network won’t pay immediate dividends. But you’ll find that as you interact with new people, the occasional career opportunity will come up. And if you’re someone who constantly provides value, then it’ll be your name that they consider.
