📈 How to Get 1% Better Every Day

Do you often struggle with your goals?

Or do you want to improve yourself, but don't know where to start?

Many of us have aspirations to improve ourselves and become the best version of ourselves.

However, we often find ourselves struggling to make progress or even get started.

The journey towards self-improvement can be overwhelming, especially if we try to make drastic changes overnight.

That's where the concept of becoming 1% better every day comes in.

By focusing on making small improvements every day, you can achieve significant progress in the long run.

The beauty of this approach is that it's achievable for anyone regardless of their current situation or goals.

Whether you're looking to improve your health, career, relationships, or any other aspect of your life, becoming 1% better every day can help you get there.

So in today’s featured article, we’ll explore 5 simple daily habits that will help you make consistent, constant improvements throughout your life.

Let’s start by answering a simple question…

Why Should You Focus on 1% Improvements?

When you aim to improve yourself by 1% each day, the benefits might not be immediately visible.

This approach is based on the principle of marginal gains, which focuses on breaking down a large goal into smaller, manageable tasks that can be addressed daily, leading to significant progress over time.

The concept of marginal gains has been applied with great success in various fields, such as sports and personal development.

As an example, in his book, Atomic Habits, James Clear talked about how the British cycling team achieved incredible results by focusing on tiny improvements in their performance, ultimately leading them to dominate the sport.

By applying this same principle to your daily life, you can achieve your personal and professional goals more effectively over time.

So why is 1% improvement so powerful?

The reason is simple:

Compounding.

When you continually improve by a small margin, the progress is exponential rather than linear.

As James Clear points out, when you improve by 1% each day for a year, the cumulative improvement is an astonishing 37 times better at the end of the year. Conversely, if you become 1% worse each day, your performance will decline to nearly zero.

So, how can you start working on your 1% improvements?

Here are five habits you can use to become 1% better each day:

1. Set Clear Goals

The first step to constant improvement is to spend some time identifying what areas of your life you want to improve and the specific goals you want to set for each of these areas.

In our video about the SMART Goals concept, we recommend that you set goals in seven areas of your life.

  1. Career

  2. Finance

  3. Health

  4. Relationships

  5. Leisure

  6. Personal Growth

  7. Spiritual

These goals will serve as your guiding light, helping you focus your efforts and stay on track.

Start by identifying the areas of your life where you wish to improve. These could be personal, professional, or even health-related.

Once you have identified the areas for improvement, set specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals.

For instance, instead of talking about how you want to “lose weight,” you should create an actionable goal like “I will lose 10 pounds in 3 months, by August 15th.”

Set clear goals like this for all the areas of your life you’d like to improve.

2. Make Consistent Daily Progress

Once you have set your goals, it is important to break them down into smaller, manageable steps.

By focusing on one small action each day, you can make steady progress toward your larger goals.

For example, if your goal is to improve your fitness, you could commit to doing one extra push-up each day. Over time, this small improvement will add up to significant progress.

It is also important to track your progress towards your goals. This will help you to stay motivated and identify areas where you may need to make adjustments.

3. Ask Kaizen Questions

Kaizen is a Japanese philosophy that emphasizes continuous improvement through small, incremental changes.

One way to incorporate this practice into your daily life is by asking Kaizen questions, which focus on identifying opportunities for improvement and learning from mistakes.

Here are some examples of Kaizen questions you could ask:

How can I improve this aspect of my life by just 1% today?

What's one small step I can take to achieve my goal?

What's one small thing I can do today to improve my health?

How can I simplify my daily routine to save time and reduce stress?

What's one thing I can learn today to improve my skills or knowledge?

How can I improve my relationships with the people around me?

What's one small change I can make to my environment to increase my productivity?

What's one thing I can do to improve my financial situation?

How can I improve my communication skills to better connect with others?

What's one thing I can do to improve my mental or emotional well-being?

How can I be more mindful and present in my daily activities?

By regularly asking yourself these questions and acting upon the answers, you'll consistently identify areas of improvement and make incremental progress.

4. Learn Something New Every Day

Continuous learning is essential for personal growth and can help you become 1% better each day.

Allocate 15- to 30-minutes each day to acquire new knowledge related to areas of your life you’re trying to improve.

Whether it's reading an article, watching an educational video, or listening to a podcast, it’s important to constantly feed your brain about new ideas or strategies that can take your skills to the next level.

Also, don't be afraid to seek advice from those who have achieved success in the areas you are working on.

Study their techniques, habits, and strategies, and incorporate what works into your daily routine. By learning from the best, you can accelerate your own progress and improve at a faster rate.

5. Practice Self-Evaluation

The final habit is to dedicate time each week for reflection and self-evaluation about the 1% habits you’re trying to build. The idea here behind this review section is to regularly assess your progress, identify areas of improvement, and reflect on your experiences.

In other words, you want to figure out how to get better results with the same amount of time you’re dedicating to a specific skill.

A helpful tool for this is a progress journal, where you can record your daily achievements and setbacks.

One great journal that we recommend is the Finisher’s Journal, where you can organize your day in five minutes, track the progress on your important goals, and review the lessons you’ve learned along the way.

Also, ask these questions during your review sessions:

Assess all your habits and their impact on your progress.

Be open to making changes and experimenting with new habits, as what worked initially may not be the best fit in the long run.

Seek feedback from others and be willing to learn from your successes and setbacks.

As you evaluate your progress, be prepared to encounter setbacks and plateaus. It's entirely normal for growth to fluctuate.

And it's important to recognize that becoming 1% better each day isn’t a linear journey. Instead of being discouraged by such hurdles, embrace them as learning opportunities and adjust your strategies accordingly.

Finally, remember to celebrate your achievements!

Acknowledging your successes, no matter how small, is a powerful way to maintain motivation and reinforce positive behaviors.

Share milestones with friends and family or treat yourself to a small reward for reaching a significant benchmark.

Celebrating your victories along the way will help you appreciate the progress you're making and remain committed to making those 1% continuous improvements.

⚙️1% Better Life

Getting a good night's sleep is crucial for maintaining optimal energy levels throughout the next day.

The problem?

Most people don’t plan out the final few hours before bedtime.

So here’s a simple action plan for creating what’s known as a “shutdown routine” each night.

Here’s the article on Twitter:

Or if you don’t have access to Twitter, I’ve copied and pasted the article here:

Having an evening shutdown routine can help you get a full night's sleep and wake up full of energy for the next day.

Here is the 5-step process:

1. Don’t consume any caffeine within four to six hours of bedtime.

Instead, substitute it with water, a calming tea, or even cherry juice—[which has been found to contain melatonin]

2. Avoid eating a big meal within two hours of sleeping.

Eating a large meal before bedtime can lead to discomfort and digestive issues like indigestion or heartburn, as your body's metabolism slows down at night to prepare for sleep.

This can also negatively affect the quality of your sleep, potentially causing restlessness and temperature increases

3. Shut down all screened devices in the last hour before bedtime.

Remember:

The blue light emitted by screens can interfere with the production of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep, thereby making it more difficult to fall asleep.

This includes TV, phones, laptops, and tablets.

You can use a Kindle device if it’s just used for reading a good book.

4. Designate your bedroom as only for sleeping.

Get rid of the TV, technology, and work-related items from this room. Do everything you can to ensure that this is only a place where you get a full night’s rest.

5. Practice relaxing habits like taking a hot shower (or bath), practicing aromatherapy, or speaking calming words like prayers.

This will help signal to your body that it's time to wind down and prepare for sleep.

💲Wealth Building Wisdom

What does it mean to live an extraordinary life?

In my opinion, it’s not about how much money you have in the bank.

Instead, it’s about having a vision for what you want and working toward it every day.

This is a topic that’s explored in Katie and Alan Donegan’s Extraordinary Life course.

The above link will bring you to a free five-part YouTube course that walks you through a framework that you can apply to your life.

Now, I have to be honest here…

It’s a lengthy course (clocking in at 11+ hours).

But hey, if you commit to watching a little bit each day (and completing the action steps) over the next 30 days, then you’ll have action plan to implement at the start of the 3rd quarter (i.e. July 1st).

By zeroing in on a specific niche, you're not just throwing content out there and hoping it sticks. You're speaking directly to a crowd that's already interested in what you have to say.

This means you can create content that's super relevant, and your audience is more likely to engage, trust your recommendations, and click that buy button.
