📈 A love letter to local libraries…

Let me ask you a question: When’s the last time you stepped inside your local library—not just to pick up a book, but to really explore what’s there?

If you’re like most people, it’s probably been a while. Maybe you drive by the building every week and think, “I should go in there sometime,” but never quite get around to it. Or maybe you think of libraries as quiet, dusty places filled with nothing but books and the occasional stern librarian shushing everyone.

I get it. That’s what I used to think, too.

But let me tell you: libraries have changed. A lot. And if you haven’t been to yours lately, you’re missing out on one of the best—and most underrated—resources in your community.

My Family’s Library Obsession

Here’s the truth: my wife and I are kind of library nerds.

We use our local library all the time. And not just for books (although, let’s be honest, the book selection is amazing). Our library is like a Swiss Army knife for our family’s interests and needs.

For example, we’ve discovered that the library is a goldmine of events and activities for all ages.

Storytime for little kids? Check.

Craft workshops for tweens? Check.

Author talks, movie nights, and even tech classes for adults? Check, check, and check.

But the thing that really blew my mind? The local Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) club for kids.

D&D was a huge part of my childhood. I spent countless hours rolling dice, fighting imaginary dragons, and making lifelong friends around the table. (Confession: I still play as an adult whenever I can.) So seeing my son get to experience that same magic—with a group of kids from our community, in a safe and welcoming space—makes my nerdy heart swell with pride.

And it’s not just the D&D club. My wife recently needed a power washer for a home project. Instead of buying or renting one, she checked the library’s “Library of Things”—and sure enough, they had a power washer available to borrow. Who knew?

That’s when it really hit me: libraries these days have just about everything.

Libraries Are More Than Books

The more I pay attention, the more I realize how much libraries have evolved. They’re not just warehouses for books—they’re vibrant community hubs filled with resources, experiences, and opportunities you can’t find anywhere else.

Here are just a few of the things our local library offers (and yours probably does, too):

1. Events and Activities for Everyone

Libraries are constantly hosting events: story times, book clubs, craft nights, tech workshops, language classes, movie screenings, board game nights, and yes, even Dungeons & Dragons campaigns. These events aren’t just for kids—there’s something for every age and interest. And most of them are totally free.

2. The “Library of Things”

This is one of the coolest trends in libraries right now. Many libraries let you borrow more than just books and DVDs. Need a power washer, a sewing machine, a telescope, a GoPro, or even a set of baking pans? Check the library. You’ll be amazed at what’s available to borrow for free.

3. Technology Access

Not everyone has high-speed internet or a computer at home. Libraries provide free Wi-Fi, public computers, printers, and even 3D printers in some locations. Need to scan or fax a document? The library’s got you covered.

4. Digital Resources

You don’t even have to set foot in the building to benefit. With your library card, you can access e-books, audiobooks, streaming movies, online courses (like LinkedIn Learning), genealogy databases, and more—all from your phone or computer.

5. Quiet Spaces and Meeting Rooms

Whether you’re looking for a quiet place to study, work remotely, or just escape the chaos of home for a bit, libraries offer comfortable spaces. Many also have meeting rooms you can reserve for free.

6. Help and Guidance

Librarians are some of the most resourceful people you’ll ever meet. Need help finding information, learning a new skill, or navigating a tricky life situation? Ask a librarian. They’re experts at connecting people with the right resources.

7. Community Connection

Libraries are one of the last truly public spaces where everyone is welcome, no matter your background, income, or interests. It’s a place where you can meet neighbors, discover local organizations, and feel like you’re part of something bigger.

Why Libraries Matter (Now More Than Ever)

We live in a world where everything seems to cost money, where we’re constantly bombarded by ads and subscription fees, and where genuine community can feel hard to find. Libraries are a rare exception: a place where you can walk in, explore, learn, and connect—without spending a dime.

They’re also a lifeline for people who need them most: students, job seekers, families, seniors, and anyone looking for a safe, welcoming space.

And as someone who’s spent a lot of time in libraries (both as a kid and as a parent), I can tell you: the impact is real. My son’s love of reading, his curiosity for learning, and his new D&D obsession? All sparked by our local library.

Your Library Action Plan

If you haven’t visited your library in a while—or if you’ve never really explored what it offers—here’s a simple plan to get started:

1. Look Up Your Local Library’s Website

Nearly every library has a website listing their programs, events, and special collections. Take five minutes to see what’s happening this month.

2. Get (or Renew) Your Library Card

If you don’t have a card, sign up! It’s usually quick and free. If yours is expired, renew it. This little card unlocks a world of resources.

3. Explore the “Library of Things”

Check if your library lends out more than books. You might be surprised by what you can borrow—tools, gadgets, games, and more.

4. Attend an Event

Pick one event or activity that interests you (or your family) and show up. It’s a great way to meet people and try something new without any pressure.

5. Try the Digital Resources

Download the library’s app, check out e-books or audiobooks, or stream a movie. Digital resources are perfect for busy schedules.

6. Say Hello to a Librarian

Next time you visit, introduce yourself to a librarian. Ask what resources or programs they recommend. You might discover something you never knew existed.

A Humble Request: Support Your Local Library

Libraries do so much good in our communities, often on shoestring budgets. They’re run by people who genuinely care about helping others and making knowledge accessible to all.

If you find value in your local library, consider supporting them however you can. Attend events, check out materials, volunteer, or donate if you’re able. Even just spreading the word helps.

Because when we support our libraries, we’re investing in our communities, our kids, and our own lifelong learning.

So here’s my challenge to you:

This week, pay a visit to your local library. Wander the aisles, check out the events calendar, talk to a librarian, and see what surprises you find. You might just rediscover a little magic—and maybe even roll a D20 or two.
